When Phuong contacted us to photograph hers and Derek’s wedding day, she told me a little about them as a couple. She told us about their meeting at Wash U and their engagement. She also said they were very laid back and flexible people. That they were very go with the flow. This we found to be very true and it led to such an effortless day.
Despite encountering a few challenges like on-and-off rain showers and construction hassles (the staircase at Brookings Hall on the WashU Campus was sadly closed for construction), Phuong, Derek and the whole wedding party took everything in stride. We were able to find shelter under the canopy of the Muny during rain and hop out to the beautiful Art Hill Fountain when the rain ceased.
But, not only are Phuong and Derek laid back, they are smart, kind-hearted, playful and absolutely adored by their friends and family. It was so easy to see that these two had an amazing group of friends and family who would do anything to make this day special to them. It takes a pair of pretty wonderful people to collect such a loyal and fun group of friends.
Derek and Phuong, I can’t tell you how much we loved being there for your wedding day. You two are the type of people who make the world a kinder place. You inspire others through a quiet thoughtfulness. It’s very evident that your love makes everyone around you want to support you. Xander and I are so happy that you chose us to photograph your wedding day and we can’t wait to see what is in store for you next.
The day started at the best man’s apartment. Derek got ready with his friends, his best man and, of course, man’s best friend, his dog, TJ. TJ wasn’t so sure about all the people around, but was definitely happy about his humans finally saying, “I do.”
While Derek put the finishing touches on his outfit, Phuong was getting ready just a few block away. The house was full of laughter, music and hairspray, as the ladies got ready in cute matching pajama sets.
All of Phuong’s details were stunning. From her Badgley Mischka shoes to her bouquet with roses and peonies to her gorgeous lace dress, Phuong looked absolutely beautiful.
Originally we wanted to do the first look on the grand staircase at Brookings Hall on the WashU Campus, where Phuong and Derek met. Unfortunately, it was completely inaccessible due to construction! Our second option was Forest Park and I think it turned out pretty well in the end.
I love Derek’s (and the bridal party’s!) face as he sees he gorgeous bride. He looks so unbelievably happy.
Of course, Phuong wasn’t the only one looking great. The groom and groomsmen were looking absolutely dapper in their navy suits.
And the bridesmaids were looking absolutely beautiful in their pink chiffon dresses.
After taking photos with the wedding party and with their families, Phuong and Derek got a little time alone to take some portraits. The cloudy sky made an amazing dramatic backdrop! Forest Park was so beautiful and we even had a little duck follow us around for a bit. let me know if you see him in any of the photos!
After the last few photos at Art Hill, we traveled to Windows On Washington for the ceremony and the reception. The ceremony was lovely and featured the best man, singing a hymn, and an amazing arch made of birch and flowers.
Once the ceremony ended and these two were official, the party could start! The reception was decorated beautifully in candles, gold accents, greenery, pink flowers and fairy lights.
One of my favorite details was the Ferrero Rocher candy place cards and the sweets table featuring his and hers sweets, like brownie bites and caramel surprise cookies (I want the recipe!). Such a sweet idea!
During the reception we snuck out to the balcony to catch the gorgeous sunset. The combination of the lights from the City Museum next door and the sunset was just perfect.
Phuong and Derek, your wedding was so much fun and filled with so much love! Let’s do this again next year, okay? 🙂
